hello hihi this is my kaze to ki no uta shrine Or i just call it kazeki :p for some basic info, it's a shoujo bl manga from 1976, So it's been around for half a century now!! actually longer if you include sunroom nite, an early early draft/plan of the series :p it also has an ova but the manga is a must-read. it's a more obscure work now but it's an important part of bl history for being the FIRST EVER serialized bl manga (if u include sunroom nite as part of it) and has influenced plenty of other works in bl and shoujo circles
quick summary.. kazeki takes place in arles, france during the late 19th century, mostly in the all-boys catholic boarding school lacombrade academy. it focuses on serge battour, a mixed french roma boy who attends lacombrade because of the will of his late father, and gilbert cocteau, an infamous student at the same school known for his looks and sexual habits. the two end up being roommates, and serge aims to befriend gilbert despite the blonde's avoidant nature. gilbert tries to push him away but.. WHAT?? They... share a lot in common??? What happens next...?? PLEASEE READ KAZEKI
Serge Battour
The lead! i think he is a very sweet boy. because he's mixed he's judged by everyone else for his looks and not truly given a chance. this is why he attends lacombrade in hope that he can find others to connect with. and he plays the piano!
Gilbert Cocteau
The Tragic light hair love interest... he is outcasted from and bullied by his peers, so he avoids school and dedicates himself to his uncle Auguste instead i cant really say a lot abt him without spoiling.. :(
Arion Rosemarine
The superintendent i guess bruh
Auguste Beau
man fuck this guy
My blabberings.. abt characters or symbols or stuff i just like a lot blahblah Spoilers beware
art
i LOVE keikos art sm Kyaa i love retro shoujo art a lot.. i think it especially stands out to me in kazeki bc of the heavy subject matter but the art is soo pretty and cute and gorgeous, this is also something in saint rosalind which also uses the pretty shoujo style. one of my fav little details in kazeki is in the last vol and scattered throughout some other parts of the series is when the characters lose the eye sparkles. i know this isnt a Kazeki limited thing but it stands out to me bc of the classic shoujo eye sparkles. and ofc i also love the shoujo expressions and when the sparkles like go beyond their eyes. i love her coloring i love watercolors and sometimes the pencil-y look that certain works have too. i have nothing against digital art but physical mediums Rllyyy stand out to me..
serge
i love serge a lot he's so cute. Even tho hes the lead all the focus kinda goes to gilbert and no hate to gilbert but i wish we got more with serge. like the extra chapter being abt rosemarine and jules instead of what serge was like after That. Smh. Also smth i wanna think abt more is that keiko draws him with unnatural hair colors a lot. i know she does it with gilbert too drawing him with white hair but thats close enough to his natural hair, but serge is drawn with green hair, blue, or sometimes with other shades mixed in with the brown.. ive been trying to think a while if this is just a fun style choice or if theres any meaning to it. Will be back
gilbert
he kinda reminds me of a bunny. on my first read i forgot left-handedness long long ago was like Evil in christianity i think that was a fun detail for keiko to add i noticed it on my second read.
prairies
This is one maybe i need to think more abt but i think prairies come up a lot when theres themes of freedom. the most obvious one is serges parents when aslan and paiva live in the cottage thingy in the Middle of nowhere BUT it happens with gilbert like twice. theres the one time after he's ran away with serge and hes like which way is paris Which basically represents his freedom from his abuser (kinda i wish..) And lacombrade which OBVS was not A place for him. and then theres another scene in his childhood where hes out in the open with the fox, away from auguste again. but thats not rlly a prairie so idk thats why i need to think more. But when u add gilberts bird in a cage motifs i think it kinda makes sense? ok whatever
birds
this is mainly abt gilbert hes drawn with wings a lot, sometimes they kinda look like angles but usually to Me more like bird wings. i really like that one illust of him looking out at the carriage behind bars i think that rlly cements this idea. Or when he looks out the window longingly this happens a few times, i guess we can believe it as looking for freedom based on the whole bird in a cage motif. In both these instances tho i think its pretty implied hes thinking abt auguste. theres also an illust of auguste with bird wings and maybe hes similar? like i think his abuse of gilbert can be traced back a lot to how he was abused by his brother, and in that way hes ALSO stuck in a cage because he can't escape the cycle of abuse, he continues to inflict it upon others. Ok i just typed some bullshitttt its ok it makes sense to me
statues
i LOVE the prescence of statues in lacombrade my two instances i can think of when serge first enrolls and sees the one covered in rain that makes it look like she's crying. And then when serge talks to karl abt his relationship with gilbert after his confession and the statue is standing right by them, drawn like its looking over... Oh my GOSHHH theres so many tiny details like this in kazeki that i just love love love sm u cant be tired and read kazeki bc u miss this stuff
